Natural Alternatives to Floor Cleaners

Natural Alternative to Floor Cleaner

“It’s cleaning time again, yay!” Said no one ever. Although cleaning your home isn’t necessarily fun for most, it’s just something that has to be done. Living in Florida, especially if you’re in one of the beach towns along the Space Coast, you’re bound to track in sand and dirt when you enter your home. Mats by the door will help but sweeping, vacuuming, and mopping are still essential to keeping your home tidy. But, did you know that many store-bought floor cleaning products are chocked full of chemicals that can be potentially hazardous to you and your family’s health?

A study from the California Air Resources Board states the following in their abstract: “When cleaning products and air fresheners are used indoors, occupants are exposed to airborne chemicals, potentially leading to health risks.” This is especially true for people with health conditions like asthma, young children, and the elderly. But, good news, there are natural alternatives to commercial cleaning products that will leave your floor clean and shiny without exposing you to harsh chemicals! Not only are they better for your health, they can save you a ton of money. Here are some of our favorites.

All-Purpose Natural Floor Cleaner

No matter what type of floor you have (unless you have carpet), this easy-to-make cleaning solution will work wonders. Simply mix one part of white vinegar with one part of water, break out the mop, and get to cleaning! For tough stains, dissolve a couple tablespoons of wash detergent in water and apply the concoction to any marks or stains. Let it sit for a few minutes, and then try scrubbing it away.

Homemade Hardwood Floor Cleaner

To get your hardwood floors clean and conditioned, mix about a quarter cup of white vinegar with a gallon of water. Then, stir in 1 teaspoon of vegetable oil and about 10 drops of your favorite essential oil. We recommend using a damp sponge to clean hardwood floors instead of a soaked mop and avoid using anything that could scratch the hardwood. Too much water can warp hardwood, and it scratches fairly easily. If you love the look of hardwood but aren’t a fan of the high cost and high maintenance, check out our durable wood look tiles!

Natural Carpet Stain Treatment

If you have light carpets or rugs in your home, you know how hard it is to keep them clean! For this natural solution, mix equal parts of white vinegar and water and put the liquid in a spray bottle. Spray it onto the stains and let it sit for about 5 minutes before scrubbing the stain (use a soft brush). If the stain isn’t coming out, spray the area again and add a couple drops of dishwasher liquid. Let it sit and try scrubbing again.
