Have you ever looked at your floor tile and wondered how it went from pristine and shiny to dull and discolored? Well, you’re not alone. Keeping up with cleaning the floors in your home can be a challenge, especially if you consider all the other chores you have to do to keep your home nice and clean. Sometimes scrubbing the floor can fall to the wayside. We get it. But, if it’s neglected for too long, it will only be more difficult for you to get the floor clean again. So, we’ve put together some tips on how to maintain a nice, shiny tile floor without scrubbing away like Cinderella.
This one’s a given, we know, but breaking out the broom every couple days will prevent dirt and dust from building up over time. It doesn’t really matter which method you use to clean your floor so long as you get into all the corners and cracks. Using a combination of sweeping and vacuuming can be effective, too.
After you’re finished vacuuming, grab the mop and your favorite cleaning solution. When it comes to mops, you don’t want anything too abrasive that could potentially scratch your porcelain tile. Be sure to know what will work best on your floor when it comes to cleaners, too. We suggest using something natural or mild so you’re not exposed to tons of chemicals and to keep from discoloring your grout. Homemade cleaners are another good option, check out our blog on how to make your own! When you’re done mopping, use a clean cloth or towel to dry your floor. Letting it air dry will cause water spots to form, so avoid doing this.
It’s amazing what a difference clean grout can make when it comes to the overall appearance of your floor! To get any stains and dirt out of your grout, you can make a paste from baking soda and water. Mix two parts of baking soda with one part water and apply the paste on the grout using a toothbrush (an electric toothbrush will work wonders!). Scrub the paste in and let it set on the grout lines for a few minutes before rinsing with water.
Different Styles for Different Tiles
Cleaning your floors isn’t a one-size-fits-all type of chore. Some tiles, like natural stone tiles, require different care compared to more durable materials like ceramic. The last thing you want to do is damage your beautiful marble tile floor by using a cleaner that’s too acidic or a scratchy metal cleaning brush! Do your homework and know what will work for your specific tile.
