Fall is officially here; bring on the pumpkins, caramel apples, and (hopefully) cooler weather! Across the nation, the leaves are starting to change color and there’s a crisp coolness creeping into the air, but as all Floridians know, our palm trees will stay green and the temperatures won’t be dropping like they are in northern states. But, that doesn’t mean that fall is any less fun in Florida! One great way to get into the spirit of autumn is to put up some festive, cheery decorations. Another fantastic way to welcome the change of the seasons is to spend some quality family time – and why not combine both of these things? Here at Island Tile, we have put together a list of some creative DIY fall décor projects that you can do with your family. Read on!
Carving pumpkins is a long-standing tradition in many families’ households, and it can be super fun! But there’s so much more you can do with pumpkins than carving creepy faces into them. In addition, if you have young children, you may not want them handling a sharp carving tool. This year try painting pumpkins instead! It can be a lot less messy than carving them since you don’t have to get the “guts” out, and keeping the pumpkin intact will allow it to last longer as an added bonus. You can even get super creative with sparkles, googly eyes, and more.
Make Your Own Wreath
Instead of putting up the same old orange and brown wreath, create your own fall wreath and customize it to your liking this year! They are super easy to make and can be the focal point of your front door, table, or wherever you choose to put it. All you need is a plain wreath, which you can pick up from your local art supply store, some strong glue, and some cute odds and ends to decorate it with. Think dried flowers and herbs, cotton balls, mini pumpkins, colorful fake leaves or flowers…basically, anything goes so long as the wreath’s base can support it. So, gather some materials, grab the kiddos, and get to work! The sky is the limit, glue whatever you think will look good onto the wreath, and once you’re happy with it let it dry. You can use the masterpieces you and your family create for years to come.
Rustic Mason Jars
These are great for so many crafts and home decor, and you can make gorgeous fall-inspired centerpieces with mason jars. Here’s an easy way to make a festive mason jar centerpiece, it’s super easy! You’ll need 4 mason jars, white chalk paint, spongy paint brushes, bright ribbons (think orange, gold, or crimson) and some kind of dried plants, like wheat. Simply paint the mason jars with the chalk paint; leaving some spots bare will lend to the rustic look. Once they’re dry, tie the ribbons around the lip of each jar and arrange your dried ferns, flowers or wheat in each jar. Voila! Your own homemade autumn centerpiece.
