Island Tile and Marble has been helping the people of Brevard County beautify their homes for over 30 years. We carry beautiful floor and wall surfaces that will transform any room, patio, or commercial building into something straight out of an interior design magazine. There are other ways you can beautify your home yourself if you aren’t in the market for a new porcelain tile floor, though! With the new year here, we thought it would be fun to give our readers ideas for some DIY home improvement and décor projects! For our first installment, we’ll go over how to make your very own rustic burnt wood art to add a personalized touch to your home.
First, you’ll need to purchase these items:
- Small wood slab
- Urethane sealant
- Picture hanger
- Handheld wood burning instrument
Once you’ve got your supplies, sand down your wood slab if it isn’t pre-sanded. Next, decide what design you’d like, whether it’s a saying or an artsy design, and practice drawing the design with a pencil onto paper. When you’ve got the design looking how you want it, trace it onto the wood slab for reference.
Now, it’s time to grab your wood-burning tool. To get a feel for it, try burning the design on the back of the wood slab before attempting to draw the design on the front. Holding it like a pen, carefully and slowly go over your design with the handheld wood burner. The slower you go, the darker the design will be. Just be careful to avoid placing the tool near anything very flammable, and it’s always smart to wear protective eye gear. Continue “drawing” the design onto your wood slab until you’re satisfied, and let it cool for 30 minutes.
After the wood has cooled, uses the foam paintbrush to apply your urethane sealer to the wood slab. This will protect it and keep the design looking fresh. Let the sealer dry according to the directions; you may want to apply several coats for the best result.
Finally, once the sealant has dried, all that is left to do is install a hanging mechanism to the back of your new wooden art piece and hang it on your wall! Depending on the size of the wood slab, choose appropriate hanging hardware and attach it using either a small nail and hammer or strong mounting tape. Then simply hang it in a prominent spot in your home and voila! You’ve created a one-of-a-kind art piece that will add beauty to your home for years to come.
