Tile Tips For Tiny Bathrooms

When the time comes to renovate your small bathroom, there are many things to consider: Should you stick with bright colors? Is it time to ditch that bulky tub? Can large tiles work in a small space?

Designing a small bathroom means you'll have to be clever and purposeful with every decision.

Here are some tips and tricks to make tiling your tiny bathroom a breeze!

Create visual interest with patterns or graphic tiles.

A subway tile laid in an unexpected pattern can draw your eye, creating a focal point. Consider a traditional herringbone, or a contemporary vertical straight stack pattern to provide an element of refreshing surprise. Graphic tiles can make a bold statement. However, limiting the use is a good guideline to follow when using graphic tiles. Occasionally, if you take them all the way to the ceiling, they'll quickly become overwhelming. Consider using them as a floor tile and extending part-way up the way behind a vanity to elongate the space.

Reflect light with glossy and polished wall tiles.

Although some people would like to stray away from glossy or polished tiles for the bathroom floor, using them on the walls is always a great idea. By reflecting light, glossy and polished tiles can make even the tiniest bathroom or shower enclosure feel spacious. An elegant polished marble look tile on the walls can reflect enough light to expand the space without looking dated.

Use large-format tiles.

Conventional wisdom says that small spaces call for small tiles—but think again. Large-format tiles can actually trick the brain into thinking the space is bigger than it is. Like a very subtle optical illusion. The larger the tile, the less grout line there is. This makes for a seamless appearance that expands the space making it feel much larger than it really is. An added bonus is there is not as much pesky grout to clean!

Add height with floor-to-ceiling tiles.

Though we've said that larger tiles can create the illusion of more space, that doesn't mean you have to forgo using smaller mosaic tiles. Using a small hexagon or chevron mosaic can draw the eye upward towards the ceiling and open the space. work to draw the eye upward toward the ceiling and open up the space. Consider using a floating vanity to cut down on square footage and clutter, while creating space for continuity.

Extend floor tiles into the shower.

Rather than changing up the floor tiles in the shower stall, consider extending the floor tiles through the entire room. This creates a seamless, uniform design that visually elongates the space, making it appear larger. Depending on the size of the tile and location of your drain, this can be achieved by running the same tile from the bathroom floor into the shower floor, or using the coordinating mosaic.
